PHOSPATING PROCESS

PHOSPATING, is the process of converting a steel surface to iron phosphate. This is mostly used as a pretreatment method in conjunction with another method of corrosion protection. A layer of phosphate coating typically includes iron, zinc or manganese crystals.

What is phosphate coating used for?

Phosphate coatings are often used to protect steel parts against rusting and other types of corrosion. However, they are somewhat porous, so this use requires impregnating the coating with oil, paint, or some other sealing substance.

Why phosphating is required?

The main benefits that phosphating provides is strong adhesion and corrosion protection. Typically, phosphate coatings are applied to steel parts because iron in the steel is required for the coating to form.

How many types of phosphating are there?

3 varieties The 3 varieties of Phosphating are Iron, Zinc and Manganese and the distinction is indicative of the crystals that are formed with each. Iron Phosphating will increase paint adherence and impact resistance as well as provide protection against oxidation.
